do you give a tip everytime you eat in a restaurant?

Usually whenever I eat out and I am given a good service by the waiters in the restaurant I would never fail to give out tip to acknowledge and say thanks you for a good service. Although other tend to say that it is part of their job to serve bu thinking that they are not getting a big salary out of it it would be better to give them something. Lately though a friend told me that some restaurants charge their customers with a service charge and this would be on top of what you have ordered for. So if a restaurant charges for a charge for the service rendered there is no need to give a tip. So I usually check the bill first before giving out a tip. How about you do you give tips when ever you eat out?

Everytime, service charge or not. I was a waitress once. It is nice to receive a tip on a table and not just for the monetary benefit but it feels good. It is a token of appreciation. I do not usually dine during service charge hours, which I find are mostly in the mid morning and early afternoon. When I dine out, it is usually in the evening. Regardless, if I receive good to exceptional service, I always tip. There have been very few times where I haven't tipped. The reason is because my order was screwed up or there was a problem with the food. If a waitress doesn't serve with a smile and enthusiasm or if my plate is not taken away as soon as I am finished with it. Also, if I am waiting for beverages or anything else for too long, I wont tip. I expect superb service to warrant a tip.

You are very welcome. I think the service charges may vary. I have seen some in the early evenings too. May be an idea to just call ahead and ask. Thank you for your comment. Enjoy!

That is how I see it too, that tip simply tells the server hoe the service was appreciated acknowledged. Thanks for sharing that tips are usually on the mid morning and the early afternoon. does this being applied to all restaurants? I will tray to take note of it the next time I eat out. I too expect a good service when I dine out. thanks for the share.

hahahaha!! I never do when I was in the Philippines. I have no idea about giving tip because I always eat in fast food where you will serve yourself. I seldom eat in restaurant where there are waiters and waitress to serve you. But when I arrived here, I observed that people always leave $2 or $5 on the table before paying on the counter. That's the time I understand the whole thing about the life of waiters and waitresses specially that I have a friend who works in a restaurant here and she said, the tip is their life.. hahaha because it is bigger than their salary.

I usually give a tip. I will give a real good tip if the service is very good. I give a regular 10% tip if the service is average. I will give them some change for a tip if they were below average. And if they are one of those types of waitress/waiters that don't pay me any attention because they use their inductive reasoning and think that Black People don't tip - They gets NOTHING!

That would how I give a tip when I eat out I weigh how the server served and the customer service provided. If I don't like the service than I won't give a cent for a tip. At time even if the food that I ordered doesn't really taste good but I was served buy a helpful and nice waiter or waitress I never fail to give them a tip after all the tip is for the server not for the bad tasting food.

I only tip when the service is good, It doesn't have to be fantastic as I know they have other customers, but a refill within 15 minutes or just checking to see if anything is needed every 1/2 hour or so will get someone a tip from me. It doesn't matter if it is added into the bill either, if you do good I will tip.

That is what you call "good customer service" my friend. I have seen and encountered such waiters and waitresses that they make an extra mile to give a great service to their customers and these people deserves a tip but there are also others that are not as service oriented at I am thinking that they shouldn't be working as waiters and serving customers. Their smiles are quite expensive.

I started my career from restaurants & know the importance of tips. This is the only good thing about working in a restaurant. What i mean is the timimings are odd, you are always on your feet, You try your best to please others but end up being picked up for other's faults. So why deprive these people of the one benefit - TIP? Recently i had a very strange experienece: there was a beggar ouside the door of a restaurant that i avoided. I usually don't give money to beggars. I finished my snack at the restaurant & tipped the waiter as usual, and imagine what this waiter does!!!!, he takes this money and gives it to the beggar outside, he aslo had a few kind words for the beggar. This experience was really humbling for me.

being into the job before helped you better understand the life of the waiters and waitresses and serving the customers. Serving is not any easy job for you need to please customers. I can see that the waiter has a kind heart. Given that his pay is not so big but then he didn't have any qualms of sharing what he has with the beggars. It would really take a kind hearted person to do that. Indeed it is such a humbling experience. Thanks for sharing.

Rarely do I eat out. To be honest it's expensive. When I do though it isn't the calibor of place that adds tips to your ticket. In this instance, I do leave a tip because some waitresses get below minimum wage figuring their tips are enough to bring their earnings up. Legally, they can do this. So yes, I tip because I was a waitress too in my younger years. It isn't easy and I'm thankful to anyone that can do tha job.

Having been into the job you fully know how they are going through and your can easily empathized with them. Tips are the life of the servers and this penny that we give them can be of great help if this will be put together. thanks for sharing and have a great day!! Happy Mylotting!!!

Well I know some places do put on a service charge but are the waiters guaranteed to get that tip or do the owners keep it? Especially if you pay on your credit card and put in extra for a tip, whats to say they actually receive it. My new boyfriend is a waiter and his tips do add to his wages and it makes him feel as if he is doing a good job if he receives something. If you love the service why not give a little extra, I do. But not if its rubbish, then I don't leave anything.

I totally agree with you if the service is good and you have the extra money then why not giving a tip. This will even add up to the salary of the waiter and waitress. This can be some sort of a help to them. Thanks for sharing.

I do normally give a tip, but the amount of the tip depends on the service, 15% if the service is good, 10% if it is average, and 5% if it is not so good. I guess if I don't get good service then I shouldn't get a tip, since it is their job to serve me my food. I always look at the bill, though.

I used to be a waitress for many years, so I feel tipping has been part of my regular routine for as long as I can remember. I used to go to placed where the gratuity was already added into the bill, and it was clearly marked for customers to see on their slips, so I didn't tip there. That rarely happens around here anymore, so I make sure to tip.

If I have extra money. I surely will. I can just imagine the joy of the waiters or any person rendering service in receiving tips. I remember when I was still working on a telegraph co., during my younger days, an old man a retired judge always give me 100 pesos everytime he sends telegram. He would always say "for your cream". I'm happy for his gesture and I know he's happy too in giving.

I give a tip most of the time but sometimes I'm in too much of a hurry, especially if its subway or mcdonalds or someplace like that. But when I do it's usually about 20 dollars regardless of the bill.

Its all depend on the situation, location and importantly the service. If the food is good, and the service is lousy, it turns me off. I wont bother to tips them. If the service is good and the food is only so so, I dont mind tipping the waiter or waiteress. Sometimes, if the restaurant have a share a tip policy, I wont give unless all the waitress or waiter showed that they really give good service. This is to be fair to those who work hard and try to please the patrons of the restaurant.

it would not be a problem as long as I have enough cash. Woudln't it be wonderful for the waiter to have an extra tip afterwards, it would bring a smile to his lips. Wouldn't it be good to make people happy? If I had the means I would tip everyone who served me. it would make a better place to live in if we give off a little of what we have. it wont hurt. happy mylotting.

in my country ,there is no need to give a tip when you eat in a restaurant, if you insist giving a tip ,I think the waiter won't mind, all their earning is salary .

It's true that many restaurants do have the gratuity added on but it's still nice to give more of a tip if the waiter did a good job. Most of the time the gratuity is a set amount like 15% and a lot of times I will tip 20 or more depending on how well the waiter did. So I just add on to the gratuity if I would normally pay 20 I look and see the gratuity of 15% and add 5% more of the original tip. But also if the waiter did horrible I still leave a tip whether there was a gratuity or not but you do it like 1 or 2 percent that will really make them know they did a bad job.

I have worked in a restaurant before and know that usually waiters are underpaid. It is a pretty stressful job and even the smallest tip is better than nothing. I think also it depends on the waiter and his attitude and how much attention is payed to you, bad service bad tip. But i usually try and be fair so i use my tip calculator on my phone and round up to the nearest dollar, but yea, ever since working as a waiter i tip almost everytime
