Has your bank ever lost one of your checks?

I got the strangest call the other night. It was pretty late at night, well, after banking hours anyway - probably around 8pm-ish. It was my bank and they wanted to know if I remembered a deposit I made through the ATM machine on December 29th - a month ago. The amount didn't look familiar, but I looked it up in my QuickBooks software and saw that it was my paycheck. They said that they have a record that it was in fact deposited through the ATM, but when they send all the paperwork (and the checks) to the main branch for verification, it got lost. They needed me to check with who wrote me the check - my boss - and see if it's cleared his account yet. It normally would have cleared his account within a week, and it's been a month. So when I got to work, the check was not showing up in his bank account. He wrote me a new check and put a stop payment on the first check. I had to take the check to my bank so they could finish processing it. I have never had this happen and thought it was kinda strange. They never asked for my account number or anything like that and the phone number they gave me to call back was in fact the right number for my bank. When I took the new check into the bank, they knew exactly what I was talking about so I know this was legit. It was just really strange. My boss and I got to talking and he did have a client once who paid his loan with a check and it was applied to his loan balance, but it was never deducted from his checking account. The same kinda thing happened to him, but for some reason they never contacted him about it. Has anything like this ever happened to you? I know there have been a few times where I've mailed a check and it's never gotten to the place I mailed it, but these checks got where they were supposed to be, they just never finished going through the whole system.

I am glad they called you and your boss put a stop payment on his check. I wonder if it got stolen from someone at the bank? I hope not. Yes I have gotten money for Tupperware then I sold it and the person who wrote me it never cleared their account. Did the bank pay for the fee for the check to be stopped? I would ask for that if I was your boss.

They did offer to pay the fee, but with my boss's account it's free for the first 6 months.

Glad it was legit. I can't recall this ever happening to me before. Glad to know that it didn't bounce your checking account and make a mess of it. That is something that would have happened to me.

I woulda been freakin' out if they were going to take it out of my account - even though I got the replacement check the very next day. I mean, that was from a month ago and it was their fault. They're pretty cool there though, it's a pretty big credit union.

That is an awful feeling and it's when you are really glad that you keep all deposit slips. At least me anyway. I have had them lose my money once and another time they put it in another persons account. I was told that one number was typed in wrong and it went to the other persons account because of it.

I haven't had a deposit go to someone else's account, but I have had someone else's check get cashed out of mine. That was a fun time...
