30 Rock: Who's Genius Idea was Alec Baldwin?

Does anyone know who's brainchild Alec Baldwin's character is? Was he attached to the show since its inception? It's hard to believe that the show would be around without him. Any thoughts on how essential he is to the genius ensemble?

I don't knwo how or when he was cast as Jack, but I think Alec Baldwin is PERFECT for the character! I love 30 Rock, and Jack is one of my favorite characters. w
