Trans Fats: Do you care?

With all the hype and negativity about the dangers of eating foods containing Trans Fats, have you changed the way you shop for groceries and/or eat out? I admit, I have started to pay more attention to the foods I buy at the market. I try to go with foods that have 0 Trans Fats when possible, but some of my favorite foods have a couple of grams of Trans Fats per serving.

I have been trying to make a better effort to buy food with lower trans fats. And I also try to work out at least 4 or 5 times a week. Lately I have been ordering my groceries online, so I am not doing as well. I need to take a weekend and go to the store and spend some time making a good list. Thanks! This is a great question.

Thanks cpamanda, I think it's an interesting topic and it's getting a lot of press lately. Some people even say it's as bad as smoking.

country crock spread - country crock spread
When it first started hitting labels, I had no clue what they were talking about (I don't get to watch much news with Nick and Disney on all the time.) But I started noticing the foods that I did normaly purchase said 0 trans fat. I figured it was a good thing. So I finally looked into what they were talking about. And I found that I am pretty happy about the choices I have made for my family's eating habits. But I have also read that if you choose to eat foods with trans fat, foods with a couple of grams in moderatation along with a balance healthy diet, will not effect you. I also read that trans fat accounts for 2.6% of total calories while saturated fats account for 11% of total calories. With that said, I am not going to worry about it too much. I already eat heathly and have learned in life that moderation is always the key.:) Oh! And if you want a good butter with no trans fat...Country Crock has some great choices. I always buy the one with calcium and vitamin enriched. Great question Chewyspree!!!

That's a good point, brokentia - moderation is the key to most everything.

I really haven't really changed the way I eat. My mom cooks healthy chinese food. At dinner, we usually have fish, meat, vegetables. And she always peels the skin of fruits and cuts them up and have everyone in the household eat them. My brother doesn't usually eat the fruit on his own, so it is good that my mom does that.

It's great that you already have a healthy diet. It's great that your mom prepares healthy meals for you so you don't have to worry about it. I'm so jealous! :)

After I saw a show that explained what trans fats are and how they clog up your ateries, I cared!! Before that I never though much about it. Yes, I'm paying attention now to the 0 trans fats and am trying to limit how much of those we're getting.

Me too, Melanie. I think as more people pay attention, food manufacturers will cut them out.

Yes, that stuff is bad for you, can clog the arteries. Being a middle aged guy, I'm trying to do whatever I can to stay 'heart healthy.' I've seen guys my age have fatal heart attacks when they seemed healthy, and it turned out their arteries were almost totally clogged. Trans fat isn't the only culprit, but it's a good thing to avoid, for sure.

I used to care very much. I was watching everything I ate, reading labels, etc. Now, I'm in a bit of a rut. My hypoglycemia is pretty bad. I know I've got to change my habits, but it's so very difficult.
