What can you do to treat insomnia? What do you think causes it? Definition: Insomnia is a symptom of a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both" and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomniacs have been known to complain about being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder. The source: Wikipedia

At the moment I don't suffer from insomnia, on the contrary I am on some antidressants which make me sleepy, so I tend to sleep a lot. I am not as sleepy as I was in the beginning, but the medicine still affects me and makes me more sleepy than I usually am. I have suffered from insomnia in the past, though. I am pretty sure that it was another kind of antidepressants that caused my insomnia. The medicine was Effexor and as long as I took it I only slept a few houes per night or sometimes I didn't sleep at all. I think that many things can cause insomnia. In my cause it was the medicine, but psychological problems can cause insomnia as well and so can a number of different illnesses.

for me it started 10 years ago when i retired, i was used to getting up at 3-4 am for work for 35 years so it was habit i guess, plus while in the marine corp we always got up early so now if i get 3 hrs sleep a nite its good ,i tried the sleeping stuff ambien but that didn't work either so i come here and reply to stuff during the nite or play games, the news repeats itself over and over every 1/2 hr. so i'll walk the dog or something but it is a pain sometimes.

i don't suffer from insomia.. but i do suffer from too much sleep. My average hours can go up till 12 hours a day. and it's quite scary. that's because half of the day is gone even before i know it. It's even worse when after sleeping for a good 12 hours, i'm still tired and begging for a nap. But now, i've forced myself to go to sleep early. And hence i wake up early. And i feel much refreshed for the day. I think it's the bad lifestyle cycle i live on.
