Is it true that Filipino celebrities are more on good looks rather than talent?

I just want to know if it's true. Many Filipino talents who are not so good looking are discovered abroad rather here in their homeland. When you compare local stars here, we are full of good looking celebrities but some lacks talent. I'm not saying all of them, but good looks seems to be first on the list before you can get noticed here in PH. When you compare hollywood stars, there are not so good looks that becomes popular with their talent. What do you think?

It is more of a rule rather an exemption but how I wish it will be reversed soon. The situation is not bad actually. Somehow we were able to see beautiful people with immense talents to grace our showbiz industry. Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Dawn Zulueta to mention a few. Undeniably, this situation of looks over talent somehow made Nora Aunor shone brightest during her prime. Having talent search in television could have helped changed the trend. However, it is obvious that this so called "talent" search are still more into looks. It is always just an exemption when a plain looking guy/gal are accepted to participate in such searches. The talent makers and show producers can influence the viewing habits of the Filipinos. However, they are justifying the situation by insisting that it is much easier to develop one's talent but to change one's face to be publicly idolized. They are somehow correct. Will the movie fanatics go gaga over a plain looking guy/gal while they deal with lots of ordinary people in their daily lives? As this is all about business, of course the star makers and producers will give what the market wants.

I don't think that good looks and talents should always go along to be idolized if we look at some old stars like chiquito, dolphy, lito lapid, nora aunor, arnold schwazeineger, silvester stallone, etc. I agree it's a plus factor if you have good looks the better you get notice and the trend in Philippine show business should be reviewed because it could be one reason why the PH cinema industry is falling. It's great if all talent could be truly develop with good looks but how about those with real talents being rejected that needs no further training?

I am not disagreeing with you. I always admire intelligence and talent before beauty. I was just relating why those in the industry keep on presenting those good looking people. They want to have bankable stars and majority of star fanatics are into good looks (we can blame that again to our colonial mentality). Who would want to manage a talented artist but can never sell a hundreds of ticket? Who would like to produce a movie with exceptional acting but will never be appreciated by the majority of movie goers?I am not saying that the general movies goers are all at fault here. The movie makers deserved to be whacked for not doing their part and even pulling down the movie industry to its level now. I can't imagine how they can let go of mediocre and boo-boo performances! Why can't they just kick out those who can't act? Worst, they keep on casting these wanna-be performers who can not improve their acting. But then again, I wonder, why do our fellow "kababayans" keep on watching and yelling for these trying hard actors/actresses?

Hi eichs! Yes I understood that your were pointing to the industry who are prioritizing good looks over talent. I also keep on asking my wife why she keep on watching local movies even it doesn't rate. It was the stars she's after, what clothes they wear but not on the story! I still ask but why? You can be satisfied elsewhere without spending money to see beautiful faces. Another thing is controversies helps a lot to boost a star's career. There was Kris Aquino-Joey scandal, Katrina Halili-Hayden Scandal, Ruffa Guitierez, etc. They all got billboard posters, tv and sitcom guestings after the scandals. Beauty + scandals = popularity.

One answer to this. Check out Filipino born actor - FELINO DOLLOSO who has been getting lead roles in feature films in Australia. Dolloso has been getting regular work in Film, TV, and Theatre mediums in Australia and is an accomplished actor. You could view several of his work on youtube. Quite a powerful actor. Would Dolloso be as accomplished and successful if he was based in the Philippines?

You're right Filipinos are discovered on other foreign land instead in our own country. That's a good question if he would be successful if he was based in the Philippines.

Unfortunately--yes, it is true. Here in our country it's all about the looks. One heck of a perfect example [I believe] is that thing on Sam Concepcion and Charice Pempengco. So call me a hater, but Sam isn't even a good singer, in the first place. It just so happened that he already had a good start [Thanks to--and Screw--Trumpets] so breaking through to him was easy as pie. Charice, on the other hand, looked so-so but her talent's just too much to bear. So Charice didn't get to be famous here, but it's the Network's loss. I mean like, who's world-famous now? And--I'd like to bash ABS-CBN for closing down FalseVoice's [the guy who uploaded Charice's video on Youtube, hence making her famous] YouTube account. They're total power hoggers and I think it's just wrong to gang up on someone like that. As for the rest of our country--we're all suckers in the entertainment business, and with that I'm saying it loud and proud. That's why I don't watch any telenovelas here or whatever: looking at dog crap is more productive than watching senseless s*it.

I also noticed that when there are local talents who get famous abroad, noon time shows like SOP or ASAP would invite them but after that, they won't get any more exposure here. I don't know if they're just jealous :-)

the truth hurts, doesn't it? unfortunately, looks play a major role in getting your name printed in a movie banner. perhaps this speels the demise of the philippine movie (and music) industry, unless something is done about it. but let's not be quick to blame the industry, as they are only trying to cater to the masses. the choice of pretty and handsome artists over talented ones is mainly influenced by the tastes of the filipino people. perhaps we filipinos will find it hard to appreciate a deep, well done movie when its actors are not beautiful. perhaps we are so used to seeing pretty faces on tv, and we reject the idea of ugly actors. this distresses me as i am a filipino and i wish to see more talent here. but can you blame showbiz and the music industry? for example, songs like "otso otso" have achieved platinum status, so it just makes sense that music producers will make more songs like it. in the same way, since people love seeing pretty actresses and macho actors, movie producers will cater to these preferences. =) sad, but true!

Yes as long as the pinoy masses enjoy good looks regardless of out of tune singing or sloppy acting, the movie industry will cater their preferences. I thinks that's why our movies are falling apart because we are focused only on the local audience instead of the international market.

If this is true, this would explain why Filipino films or actors are not getting recognition in the International Festivals. I found an article in goodnewspilipinas.com regarding an up and coming Filipino/Australian Actor who apparently has been signed up to do a Hollywood blockbuster. The article is titled - Dolloso in key Hollywood action film role. http://goodnewspilipinas.com/wp/?p=4274 His name is Felino Dolloso. It's an interesting article.

You are rigth to say that, I used to go to movies before, but now not anymore since those buities had no talent and i find it cheap movie, well my wife used to ask me to go so i just go to sleep in the moviehouse, so this time my wife allows me to pick my choice and i always ended up selecting foreign produced one where i can enjoy my money. Last December, i was gyped by the trailer movie that it is good, so i said never mind its anyhow a comedy, but when i was inside, same thing i observed, people with no talent are playing comedies and you could hardly laugh. No wonder our movie industry is dying, the funny thing is they are asking why? Can we not produce better movies with real talent and not only by beautiful faces who are boring?

Looks seem to be the main "talent" that people look for but they overlook real talent like Charice Pempengco who only achieved success in Korea. Cheers!!

I do not agree. I say its more on the guts you have to join show business. every now and then the industry held auditions for their shows and upcoming shows. and we don't see people swarming this studio to participate. the reason is "hiya" no guts to prove to public that they can get the role. if you really want to go into showbusiness then go to GMA or ABSCBN. they conduct daily auditions

i think so, as i notice some celebrities got only on good looking or beauty. here in the philippines, they are looking after your physical appearance to be star. they are not aware that there are many filipinos got talent because we filipinos are born with so many cultural activities.i agree with you but there are celebrities that reach highest degree in education...not all

Goods looks on some celebrities in the philippines are top priority , because it is their assets. The beauty and handsome as an actress or actor makes people to be recogniced .Other celebrities also have their own talent but most of all have discovered by their good looks. Now a days, the industry change their strategy in searching star. They open search for the star in the whole country .They look, judge, listen who can act, sing and dance and who ever win, has the chance to become a star or celebrities. Some Filipino talents are discovered abroad because their uniqueness. They go abroad or rather discovered abroad because in the Ph they dont have a chance to be a star.

well i guess here in the Philippines, more celebrities are good looking because beauty means a lot in the industry but there are still celebrities who are both good-looking and talented. and besides what is important is how their performances affect the viewers. but i also believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I somewhat agree that Filipino celebrities lately are more on good looks than talent. But somehow, the audience is also partly to blame because they support those who are very attractive and appealing, yet talentless. Most good-looking stars now are what I can consider "ham actors". But to be perfectly fair, there are good-looking Filipino stars who are also talented. :)

Maybe it's also because the trend of showbiz for the past few years has become pro beautiful only. The taste of Filipino viewers must have evolved into being too physical regardless if the stars have talents or not. I've noticed from watching the 60's to 70's Filipino classic films, when Dolphy and Susan Roces were young, there is a very good balance of talent and beauty. More talented people arise when the generation of Vilma Santos, Hilda Koronel and Lorna Tolentino came in, and maybe on the time of Sharon Cuneta, Maricel Soriano and Manilyn Reynes. After their time, younger generations came in such as Ruffa Mae Quinto and Diana Zubiri. Notice that the trend is going up for those who are beautiful and sexy. And thus, the Filipino showbiz and cinema world started to die when it comes to talent and variety.

I agree with you. alot of filipino talents these days are more on good looks than talent. for example, sam concepcion and and who was that little girl who was dicovered in youtube? They were competing on the same contest and sam won because of I think his looks. Hehehehe... SAm also has a very good talaent but that girl has more tlant than sam.
