What are your ideas for a novice gardener on expanding a garden

HI, I am starting my planning early this year for my garden, as last year I didn't even get half of it done. I am attempting to expand a flower garden to encompass the back corner and side of my 3/4 acre backyard. I have moved some Liles and other flowers that are overtaking my front garden beds into the garden last year. I am trying to create a garden that I don't have to to major overhauls every year, just add some filler plants throughout the year but the majority to come back and grow again and again. I would like something to bring in more hummingbirds. I do have a feeder that 2 come to but would love to have more. Does anyone have any ideas on easy to grow and maintain plants, shrubs and bushes. I do live in Canada I believe I am in zone 5. I would love to hear about other garden ideas.
