What is 'codswallop'?

I know wallop used to be a name for beer and cod is a fish so is it beer for cod to make them easier to catch? Or is it beer made from cod to prove the English will drink anything? Any other explanations will be welcomed.

Wikipedia to the rescue again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codswallop I prefer the second explanation to the first.

It's called wrongopedia and I wouldn't trust it to tell me the sky was dark at night.

www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/codswallop.html www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutwordorigins/codswallop?view=uk or www.allwords.com/word-codswallop.html After that. I give up. They can't all be codswallop.

It's a slang word and one you can check by looking it up in the dictionary. It was in constant use when I was a little kid but now all you hear is "bullsh!t" instead. It's rubbish really, just a lot of nonsense...some might even say "Balderdash!"

I prefer 'codswallop', 'balderdash' and 'piffle' apart from anything else you can type them here with no exclamation mark.
