I am planning on getting an upgraded system because my laptop right now is running: XP pro 512mb of RAM and only 75gb Hard drive. So, which of these operating systems do you feel is best overall and why?

ONLY 75gb hard drive? I have 12 and that's an upgrade for me. I'm running windows 2000 professional but I think XP is the best and would like to get it. Why? I've heard it has more security, plus I think maybe someof my computer errors would disappear, plus there are some programs that say you need to have at least XP, like Trend Micro. I know someone who put vista on their computer and had problems. They put XP on and it works pefect.

I've been using Vista for over a year now and I have no complaints. Anyways, it was pre-installed when I bought my HP Pavilion laptop so I don't have much of a choice. My desktop runs on XP Pro.

Well I am not a Microsoft fan, and haven't used Mac OS so would suggest Linux as first choice. But as you don't give me that option I would then have to go with XP with at least service pack 2. Vista stinks and a still has a lot of problems associated with it, which is why they are rushing to get Windows 7 out as quick as possible, and from what I have read, although not as bloaty as Vista, it is basically the same with a few more tweaked graphics on the front end. So there you have it, but seriously consider Linux, it's not so geeky anymore and certainly would run fantastic on the hardware you have. By the way, Welcome to Mylot.

I think the XP OS, which you are running is the best suited for you laptop. I dont know much about Apple OS x, but I surely suggest you not to go for Vista, because it not only take your 50% of hard disk, but also gives you poor performance with the RAM you have. If we talk about windows 7, we just have the beta version, right now I recommend not to use it, until it becomes a full version. So my best choice for your lappy is XP(which you've already).

Well you don't say what your processor speed is or what you mainly use your computer for. First of 75 gig hard drive should be adequate so long as you don't download too many movies or games. Even so you can always get an external 250 gig drive for under a hundred dollars. I am more concerned with your ram memory. If you are running any dvd software of gaming then you need more ram if your computer will take it I would put another 512 chip in it. I would not upgrade my system at all. I don't really have anything against vista but why change something that works good? Windows xp may use a little more space on the hard drive than our older versions did but we have compensated with larger hard drives and more ram to help it run smoother. I have heard that windows 7 still has some issues so I wouldn't be rushing to get that either. I believe that windows xp will do everything you want and if you want a little better performance then see about upgrading you ram and hard drive. Are you having any performance problems causing you to want to change?

If you need to upgrade your hard disk,no need of changing the OS. If you still want to change the O.S, and if you were working with XP more than minimum of 3 years, then you never choose window vista. Windows vista is suitable for those who going to learn the computer with vista. Windows Xp with SP2 or 4 is the best, update the OS when and necessary (Automatic update is not advisable, though Microsoft is recommending)
