Can you read musical notes?

I know some people who play a guitar without knowing musical notes. How it is easier to learn to play an musical instrument: when you know the notes or vamping?

It was a long time ago, i could read the very simple kind. But I do have the talent to tell out the musical notes as long as I can sing the song or tune. then I can play it clumsily on the piano.

I can read musical notes. I took piano lessons when I was in 5th grade up until I was in senior high.
