My CD/DVD drive doesn't work!!

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Vista that's about a year old. About a month or so ago, I went to burn a CD and put a blank one in the tray, closed it, and Autoplay didn't come up. Hmmmm. So I went to my computer, checked out my devices, and my computer says the device is working properly. Except it's not! lol. When I put a CD or DVD in the tray and close it, I can hear it spin, the light comes on, but nothing ever happens. I am thinking maybe if I uninstall it and re-install it that may fix it .. but .. if I uninstall it will I be ABLE to reinstall?? I don't want to end up worse off than I already am! Heeeeellllllp! :D

This is my problem as well! I'm using a Dell laptop that is still running XP but my CD drive hasn't been able to burn CD's for well over a year now and my computer also says the drive is working fine. I can't figure out what the problem is. I think it's just time for me to get another computer.

I've tried just about everything I've found on the net and nothing has worked.

What have you tried so far? I searched through a few tech support forums but none of the solutions listed in there have helped me.

Hi, cortypants: The calvary just may be here. I also have a Toshiba (Qosmio) running Vista. Oft times when I install new software I lose my CD. What happens is something screws up your register. At http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932246 you may see an explanation of your problem. Vista did not like something you installed. I used the solution given for code 314060 which tells you how to make a couple of changes to the register. (Use that same link - just substitute the numbers). I understand your frustration. This on drove me crazy. Luckily it is an easy fix. Irritating at times, but easy. Good luck.

Sometimes all I have to do is delete the entry for the upperfilters in the registry and then restart. I still have hope. ^_^

You should get the model number of your laptop, its right there flip it upside down and you'll see. Now we need to go to the toshiba official website and get the cdrom drivers and reinstall them. Tune up utilities is a software that goes by its name, it tunes up the pc for fine performance. You should try it out, ask me and I'll send the program over. cares ~fiazio

Hi cortypants! I'm sorry I couldn't give you an answer to that 'cause I have the very exact same problems as yours. My Gateway laptop's CD-ROM drive doesn't work too and when I checked the drive, it says it's working properly. Autoplay doesn't come up and the computer's doing nothing when I insert the disc though I'm hearing it spinning. I don't know what to do. I have a Vista Home Premium one. If you would be so kind to let me know if you have found the solution to that, I would very much and so greatly appreciate it. Thanks, cortypants!

Try to buy a clean up cd.Then you put cd in your cd drive and it turns on and clean your dvd drive. If you have your laptop only one year try to put it in the service and tell them to change or fix it.I think if u can see your drive in your windows problem wount be in your drivers so dont try to uninstall them and then install again because it wount help ya.

So Toshiba doesn't have older drivers or solutions for this. The latter is not surprising but the former is. You might have to employ a computer forum and see if they've run into the problem. Here's an example. http://www.fixya.com/support/t1381172-toshiba_satellite_a135_s4527_cd_dvd But from what you describe it could be one of three problems. The first two are hardware issues. Either the lens of the DVD drive is dirty or in disrepair, or the connection of the DVD drive to the motherboard is gone. The third item is software related, likely a driver issue. My old HP went through this and I had to search online for replacement drivers. On further review, I found a page that has driver downloads on the Toshiba site http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp?nav=Download Go under "Portables" and that will bring the list for laptops. Select your laptop type (Satellite right?) and then select the model. Check to see if there is a specific update for your drivers.

I think it's a problem with the hardware, maybe the lens is broken or something. So far the only thing I haven't tried is uninstalling the drive and re-installing it. I bought a new lens cleaner to see if that was the problem and it didn't help ... I was hoping it would be an easy fix (someone would say, oh, just hit control 9 and it'll work again, LOL) but I am now thinking I'll have to live without one or bring it to a repair shop. I really do appreciate your help!! After work tonight I will try to uninstall it. If I can't reinstall it, I'm no worse off than I was!

i hope there is no problem with your CD/DVD drive. Change your setting and enable autoplay it's enough if try to open from 'my computer' were you able to open and browse the contents of the CD?

Nope, the problem isn't with Autoplay, it's enabled and works for everything else... It just won't read any cd's or dvd's at all. I put them in and they spin, but it won't play anything. :(
