Hamster as pet.

A few years ago, my sister feed a hamster as her pet. She spends quite a lot of money buying food, place for hamster to live and etc. But, sadly to said, hamster's life-span is very short. It just can live for a few months only. It really make my sister very sad. What is hamster's actual life-span?

They generally live two to three years. My daughter wanted one, but I talked her out of it because we have two cats. The thing wouldn't stand a chance around here.
