Hey mylotters, I am writing my dissertation and the topic is "the effects of silence in Sino-US communication". Thus I need to collect some data so that I can associate it with the theories. Please, if you are American, give me a response, telling me what's your impression of silence (I mean the silence in communication) and why do you have this impression. If you happen to have some interaction with Chinese, tell me what's your perspective of the Chinese silence while you are willing to. Your answer will be used as part of the data in my dissertation and your help will be highly appreciated. Thank you all for your response in advance. Your help will be needed continuously because I have some more survey to conduct. Thank you all again. P.S. If you are American and are willing to accept my interview by e-mail, PM me and that would be really helpful. Hugs from chrissie

I guess I don't understand - do you mean the silences that happen in a conversation? Silence between times you communicate, like you have a interaction and then go back to your government/business and then take a long time to do it again? I will say that many American's don't seem to be able to allow a silence to linger in the course of a coverstation, they have to fill it up. But that just may be my view.

Your idea will be valuable for me. I am sorry I didn't present the question clearly enough. I should limit it in academic field and daily life. I was not clear enough how to present my question. Would you please tell me why you think the American will not allow a silence in a conversation? It's important to me too. Thank you for you response and good day. Glad to meet you on mylot again

it feels ackward, but I'm not always the best person to ask about that because I'm not generally the one who feels obligated to fill it

I can see that because even though I am a Chinese, I will try to run the conversation too. By the way, have you have any suggestion on how I can get more opinions? Or should I just ask the question more specifically? I really need to get some data and can not get in tough with enough Americans since I am on campus.

I am so sorry that I didn't state it clearly. I actually mean any form of communication but mainly verbal. Thanks for reminding and thanks for your response
