When do children know what a lie is?

I have 4yr & 3 yr old son, they usually dont lie but sometimes he blaims he's imaginary friend.. Sometimes when they understand that they did something wrong they always admit. Please, anyone can give me an opinion?

Actually, my just three year old knows when he's about to do something wrong or wants something, he'll take it, hide it in his hand and runs off. I think he knows the difference between what mommy will like and what she won't like. Therefore, I think he knows what a lie is. *Pleiades
