Did I hear correctly that the top male and top female are chosen first and second...then the next highest vote-getter is third? Is this system actually fair? For example...if three female contestants received the highest votes and a male was fourth ....is this system fair for the third female (who is eliminated based on gender, rather than actual audience choice).

Unclestan, Although it may not seem fair and better singers may be passed over for more popular ones, this is the format AI chose for this season. The three rounds of 12 performers will have the top male and female vote getters and then the next top vote getter go through to the top 12. After the three rounds, the judges will bring some(probably not all) of the contestants back for a wild card round and the final three will be chosen by the judges.

It just bothers me that "deserving" singers may be missing out, because of no fault of their own. Isn't the ultimate goal to arrive at the best overall performer? Maybe they should have two winners at the end.......Best Male and Best Female. Or have all males perform one night and all the females the next.

I totally agree with you, it should have nothing to do with gender. I have always thought that to be an unfair way to judge. I personally think some good people have gone home in past seasons because of this. It should be done solely on Americas votes, so what if they end up with 10 guys and 2 girls.

I think that american idol is fair. I believe the best and the one who gets the highest votes that are male and female should go through. I believe this because the best female has worked her but off and all the females are competiting for that highest female vote and the same goes for the male. The contestants know this and that is what they work for. Also they all have a second chance and that second chance is up to the four judges, so they all need to perform there best to be chosen the next three from the fourth week of getting into the top 12.

This is not fair you are correct it should be top three vote getters end of story. So when the three weeks are over there will be more than likely 5 and 4 either way male / female. Do we the nnot know the three wild cards chosen will be made to bring the 12 to 6 male 6 female. That means a male like Anoop who lost last week by 20k votes could be locked out of a wild card becuase they are only choosing one male wild card form all three weeks. Who does not love a good conspirisy theory?

Yeah, that does seem a little unfair, and it could go the opposite way, too. But at the same time, I think they try and divide up the men and women equally, so that for the final 9 everyone gets a chance. I don't know, that's a tough one.
