HELP! im having problems with yahoo messenger on my new blackberry!

i just bought the blackberry pearl and i can sign in and send texts but cant receive them.. i have never had a blackberry before so im not used to any thing about it.. anyone know how to make it to where it will receive instant messages on yahoo on blackberry? i tried asking blackberry via its help area but that just gives me info on blackberry messenger
