why friends sometimes don't listen?

there is a situation in mine where my friend used to be in a hopeless situation in life. he had a baby with her girlfriend, before that happened, i am always telling him that always be careful about choosing things in life. and now as he grasps up another chapter in his life, he is now regretful about the thing's he'd done. my question is why are they sometimes careless not doing our advice instead having something which might cause them trouble in the end?
