The reason behind the superiority of English

English is a global language. Even if it is not highest speaking language, it is hard to think a life in this globalised and closely connected world without English. So, what is the main reason behind this dominance of English. I think, it is the US and UK universities which gave English its values, as most of the research papers were and still continues to be published in English.
