why did god destroy the tower of babel?

please can anyone tell me why god destroyed babel and scattered its people. i have researched and cant possibly seem to understand why babel was destroyed.. as for sodom, i understand that it was because of thier sinful ways and abominations but for babel, i cant seem to know why.. can anyone tell me why?
