I was reading a news article about another student who lost his life to the menance of ragging. What starts out as a prank, becomes something else as a way of letting the frustration out and a way of establishing superiority. The student undergoing ragging can go through extreme humiliation to depression and in this case the student was beaten to death. Shocking. What are your experiences and views on ragging ? Have you ragged some juniors during your school and college days to a point of humiliation ? Or have you been at the recieving end ?

I agree with your view point that ragging that too physical ragging is really very bad and despite all claims by the concerned authorities, ragging takes place at various colleges unhindered. It can be fatal and telling for the new comers, who just join college and do not have any idea about ragging. You are right, it is a kind of process for the seniors to vent out their own frustration through ragging freshers. I was once at the receiving end and I had to face absolutely bitter experience, which I would not like to recall here. On my part, I tried to rag one student while in college that too lightly and things went on for 15 minutes and then suddenly the other fellow started laughing loudly........to my astonishment, I was dumb stuck when he told me that he was a final year student though he would look quite younger like a fresher.

Yes Deepak. You have experienced some of it and so know what it means. Unfortunately, many who go through this, think that they need to do this to freshers as well in sometimes more cruel and disgusting ways. It it ends in a laugh for all then it's great. Thanks

I believe the 'revenge' feeling should not come in the minds of seniors.

This is barbaric. Who is responsible for the mental make up of these goons? Who has failed to teach them the basic humanity from the childhood? How come they are not scared of the law? Why are these youngsters slowly turning into monsters? What makes us to say that we are the more civilized and humane society in the world?

Yes Bala, The mental make of these people needs to be questioned. Failure in being taught the humanity and thinking that they can get away with things like this. Thanks

Yes, it was really sad to go through the first page of newspapers today. Ragging has always been a problem in India and the government is just making rules. They never implement them seriously. I really feel sorry for the boy and his family. I hope the accused are taken to task seriously. They should be barred from studying any course at any college in this country. I know this is harsh but this is the way people would learn.

Tough measures have to be taken to send a message across that this will not be tolerated. Thanks

There is a thin line between point of fun and humiliation. I do hope that they enforce the law seriously. Thanks ace.

Luckily I never suffered ranning, but I have always been very well accept by my peers at school. Probably today times have changed, I note that the new generations are quite violent and not prepared to accept others, especially diversity.

That may be true. I think it varies from one place to the other. Thanks
