Have any of you read the news lately about what this idiot wants to do with the stimulus money in Texas? http://www.star-telegram.com/schools/story/1255959.html PAYING students for good grades? The Government PAYING students for good grades???!! What the HELL? What happened to good old fashioned VALUES? Like, you go to school, you earn a degree, you get a job, and you support yourself or your family? I am thinking it's about time I write a letter to Congress: Dear Congress: I am writing to you file a complaint of discrimination. I am a law abiding citizen. I did not get arrested last year. Give me money. In fact, I did not get into a car accident last year. Give me money. I never even got a traffic ticket. Give me money. I recycle at every opportunity. Give me money. I ride my bike or walk to work out at the rec center (instead of driving my car, wasting gas, and polluting my neighborhood). Give me money. I nursed my children extensively and therefore have saved you (the government) an undisclosed amount in healthcare services. Give me money. My children don't know what McDonald's is. Give me money. I have paid off my student loans. Give me money. I have never utilized welfare. I have not assaulted anyone. Give me money. I haven't stolen anything. I have am a volunteer. Give me money. I am a blood donor. Give ME MONEY! You have been discriminating against me, and my fellow law abiding citizens. We, who utilize good judgement and have strong morals and values are being punished. Money is being WITHELD from us! I will gladly hold my hand out, in waiting to be repaid for all of my goodness. Lori I am truly disgusted with the human race. I mean seriously. You can't just BE a good person anymore, and do the right thing, without expecting to be rewarded in some way for it?? This was wriiten by a good friend of mine, and I couldnt agree more. I asked her permission to post it here, and she agreed. Her beliefs are mine, how do you feel?

I would like to point out that the students of Texas have not asked for this money. Also, I have a good idea as to what happened to old fashion values: They have not been taught in a long while. If they had then we would not be saving companies' butts for being unethical with other people's money. Amazingly enough many people last year were given money for no reason, it was called a stimulus check. (I did not get one who cares.) As far as rewarding students for grades, Half of the money is given to then at the grading perios and the other half only given IF the student graduates. I personally think this is a good idea, these kids could actually afford to take a college class or two. Good grades are not as much an economic factor as going to college. If you want to make A's there are people who will help you, but there is not always a way for someone to afford college. (I know I do not qualify for help in my classes because I make enough money to pay my bills and not anymore than that and I do not have kids.) Your friend makes a good point. Have a great day. By the way: Texas has refused much of the stimulus money so far, we prefer to work to earn our money.

First off, I live in Texas as well, and I am a college student, so the money sounds great. I hate that I have to take out loans for school, but I know I will be able to pay them off when I get into my career. Also, I am very happy to be here in Texas because we are surviving th ebest during this recession! OK, that may have been a little off topic. I understand your point as well, but you said something that I want to clear up. Students dont need this money for good grades just to go to college. anywhere in TX, if you make the honor roll in highschool, you are eligable for scholarships!!!! Scholarships that can pay for your first year of college, then if you do well that first year, you can qualify for more financial aid. I promise, that if our students want college bad enough they could get it (there are far too many options) they dont need free money for A's, B's and C's! " By the way: Texas has refused much of the stimulus money so far, we prefer to work to earn our money." I am happy to here this, I will be keeping my eyes open for more information on this! Thank you for your response!

I found a recent article about this (for DC not Texas), and thought you might be interested. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/21/AR2009032100760.html

Thank you for that article. I think that if these kids can be motivated by mney then we should pay them. I had to do some research last semester and washington DC is the worst schoo system in America. They have the lowest acheivement in the country and their 4th graders are behind by at least two years in math and reading. I hope it works for them.

Hi Cupid, What you are saying make sense, but I don't think students who make straight C's on every report card deserves $20/grade. Do you? I think if they were to do this, only students who try hard and make honor role should be rewarded.

A scholarship is to award already gifted people? But these newer scheams reward all for nothing really?

One can't help but wonder what the world is coming into. I so agree with you...where's the old fashioned values? we are sending the wrong message to the younger generation. We are sending the message that doing our duties and responsibilities should have monetary reward. It's the responsibility of every student to strive and get good grades. As it is also our duty & responsibility to be law abiding citizens, protect the environment, provide for our families and take care of our own.

Exactly!!!! If we live responsibly we will be rewarded with a healthy, loving, joyous lif! Money for C's and B's just provide a quick stimulious, and will not fix the problem! Thank you for your insight!

Well I think that an idea like this is kind of stupid. I do think, like the first responder said that the students did not ask for it. Although, I suppose that's neither here nor there, because even if they did not ask for it, they'll still want the money if there's a chance they can get it. Using that money to do other things for education would help a lot more then paying students to do better, which in fact, might just be causing the smarter kids in the school to do more work because they will probably be the ones doing the homework for the ones who fail and want the money anyway. They need to rethink where the money is going, if it doesn't go towards education in the right sense, such as more books, movies and etc to promote more learning with a fun twist, then it needs to go the state of Texas for something else. Lol, or to my pocket, I'm just kidding!

Agreed! I think that all of that money could go to the poor school's budget. Maybe that way they can get some better materials, and or services for the struggling students. Doesn’t that sound like a far better idea, than giving students an allowance?!?!?1

It does, especially since they can't be sure that the students aren't cheating, or even the teacher's aren't.

This is disturbing! I especially love the line about being "repaid for all my goodness". That is so true! It seems that if you do all the things your friend did - in order words, be a responsible law-abiding citizen you get the shaft! But if you don't pay your mortgage, don't pay your student loan, take care of yourself and your family, and (GASP!) give of yourself you are taken advantage of by the government because they take from you to cover all the other people who have not behaved as you did. I think this is the reason for all the tea parties lately!
