On several message boards I have seen people threaten others by telling them they'll know who they are and they'll post their IP address and real address and name. Is that at all possible? I know that board admin can do that, but just a simple other poster? How is that done?

Yes, actually on can know about the location of an IP address, but not ur street address or who own it. There are two types of IP addresses: 1)Static IP address : It means ur IP address remains the same whenever connect to internet using ur ISP(Internet Service Provider). Like: www.wikipedia.org or any site, they own static IP address. 2)Dynamic IP address : It means whenever u connect to internet using ur ISP, u get new IP address every time. It's hard to find location of this type of computer as ur IP address keep on changing. So, go & find what type of IP address u own. www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/ There r some s/w(s) available on the internet which can hide ur [i]IP address[/u], so u can try one of them, if u have been under threatened by some hacker or unknown person...[;)]

It's dynamic. I'm just wondering. It's a newspaper blog and this guy has been threatening a friend of mine. I know you can get an IP from an email, IM, chat, or once you visit a website. I just can't figure out how somebody who doesn't have access to the website info and is just somebody else posting comments to articles... how that person could get your info. It's kind of disturbing to think that is possible.

Only ur physical location can be spotted through an IP address, but not ur street address or phone number. One can't retrieve your personal information from just an IP address. You are not stealing anything that that guy will punish you. He is just scaring you. If you are posting something wrong on myLot & if admin get alert about that, he/she can only ban your ID, not your IP.

Hi, jonesy123! Do you mean that they can do this at myLot??? I would not want someone to find out my IP address. I know that they say that this can be done.. But, I am unsure how. I know that someone told me that they could find out my IP and get me into trouble. I fed them a bogus lie and I told them that they won't be able to track me down, because I am someone else. I told them that the police will never be able to find me. It was so funny.. They never bothered me again. I hate when someone threatens me about finding out my IP or my personal information. I will just lead them in the wrong direction, just to get them off of my back! IGNORE THEM!

No, it's not on this forum, but it certainly is a concern as heated as some arguments can get here. It's a friend of mine who got herself a stalker so to speak. Now he is threatening to come by her house, because he doesn't agree with her opinions on a certain topic. Of all places it's a local newspaper blog, so the chances of narrowing her down by area has become greater. She did back off from the forum but is still afraid that guy might knock on her door.

Well, for me... I don't care if somebody threatens me like that... so, what can he gets if he will post my IP? hahahaha I will just ignore people who will be doing that...unless he will terrorize me, then I will do something about it... but it's not a big deal to me if somebody threatens to do that.
