Why do people think deities are powerful then humans?

The reason I ask is because humans can build things but yet there are many animals that are more powerful then humans.

The word "deity" means "god", which is essentially a being with great power. Humans refer to deities having greater powers than humans because that's what deities are: powerful. Of course, may people believe that humans are as powerful as, or even more powerful than, deities, which essentially puts mankind on the pedestal of "god".
