Our family friend, lets call her Jill, lost her job two days ago and of course I feel awful for her. She is devastated which is normal especially given the fact that without a job in this economy she has nothing. But sadly this situation started a fight between me and my mother. My mom wants me to hang out with Jill and help her look for a job. She wants me to try and be all consoling and stuff. But what she doesnt realize is that I have NO IDEA what to say. I'm only 18 i've never had an adult crying on my shoulder. How do i explain to my mom that i can't handle this situation without making it seem like I don't care (because i really do)? Help!!!

Sometimes, you have to actually ask for forgiveness before you can be forgiven. Once you do, I am sure you will have plenty to say and I am almost positive that your friend Jill has a kind heart and will forgive you, but you must ask for forgiveness. Jill doesn't need you to find a job for her, but she does need your support. When she finally does find a job, support her and let her know how happy you are for her even if it is a part time job. And if you care....than just act like you care. Call her up, tell her you are thinking of her, invite her out for coffee or even to your house if she can't afford to go out for coffee, be there when she needs someone to talk to. And...just wondering, why isn't your mother consoling this family friend instead of you?

Thanks so much. I just get really overwhelmed because i always feel like i cant help. But my mom works all day and by the time she gets home Jill has usually gone to sleep. But like i said thanks you soooo much. i really like the coffee idea, especially since most days i need coffee to function.
