Generic or name brand?

At the grocery store, generic or store brand always seems to be cheaper, while national brands are more expensive. Do you think that national brands are therefore better quality than store brands? Or are store brands sometimes just as good, if not better than the national?

I think both generics and branded products have their own special way of attracting buyers. But personally, i find it more practical to choose brand names. I'm not saying that quality is not good with generics, i just feel a lot more secure considering the fact that branded products does not only stand on its name but on its proven track record. I'd rather pay for something a little more expensive and be confident about it than gamble and feel hesitant.

I can understand that. I usually try the national brand first, and then the generic. If the generic is just as good, then that's the one that I continue to buy. If the generic brand stinks, then I don't mind paying more for the national brand.

I might say that it all boils down to practicality. We all want to get our money's worth. Spending a little on brands may seem impractical as we see it today but if the product durability as well as its warranty is concerned it would be a lot more beneficial for us in the long run anyways.

I usually buy store brand because it's cheaper. But there are a few items that I just don't like the way the store brand tastes, so I buy name brand. My boyfriend refuses to buy or eat store brand food. He only buys name brand! One time we were going grocery shopping and we'd passed the peanut butter isle, so I volunteered to go back and get some. So I picked out the store brand since it was the cheapest, and when I brought it back he didn't want to get it! He wanted to get name brand peanut butter! The best part was, it wasn't for us! It was for our dog! I'm allergic to peanut butter, and he doesn't ever eat peanut butter! But we do occasionally put it in our dog's Kong for a special treat! So he didn't even want to get store brand peanut butter to give to his dog!

I tend to prefer name brands, although I sometimes buy generic products when the quality is comparable to the name brands. I like to compare the ingredients used in both types to make sure they offer the same amounts.

i buy all the generic brands i can. alot times like clothes u are paying for the label. if u find something u don't like in generic u don't have to buy it again but the only thing i have ever bought in a generic brand was a spaghetti sauce that i didn't like.

Its funny that you used spaghetti sauce as an example, since my favorite sauce is generic. I think that it tastes far and above better than all the rest, so I'm hoping that it was different than the brand that you tried :).

It depends on the product. Most foods taste better with the name brand, but occasionally I will find a generic that tastes just the same or better. I take the generic aspirins most of the time because I find that they actually work better for me. When I have trouble sleeping the generic sleeping peels knock me out while the others keep me asleep a couple hours and I end up staring at the ceiling the rest of the night. So, I don't have a problem with generic stuff until I try it and its not as good. That rarely happens though.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with trying the generic, then deciding that the national brand really is better, and worth the extra money.
