he City of Nawabs has been chosen by Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, as its sister city. Lucknow is the only city in the country shortlisted by Brisbane for the honour. Brisbane's sister city programme provides for developing commercial, cultural, sporting and other mutually beneficial exchanges for Brisbane-based businesses and its sister cities. In a letter to the Mayor of Lucknow Dinesh Sharma, Lord Mayor of Brisbane Campbell Newman said "As Lord Mayor my aim has been to transform Brisbane into a world city that works enthusiastically and collaboratively with our neighbours in the Asia Pacific region. Part of this work has involved the activation and expansion of our 'Sister City' relationships." The letter also mentions that Brisbane has a sizeable Indian expatriate community, which is quite keen to form a 'sister city' relationship with an Indian city. A community consultation workshop was held late last year to discuss Brisbane City Council's commitment to select the most suitable Indian city. "At the end of the workshop, I am delighted to inform you that your city was one of the four cities identified as a potential future 'sister city' of Brisbane. These identification processes were based around economic, education and social issues," said the Brisbane Mayor.
