Oh how I wish this were true. I have lived in Mexico 6 years and I'm still struggling with it. I have never taken formal courses and I'm getting ready to do this. Maybe at this time I would be able to really learn something! I have tried various CD's and online learning courses (freebies) but still have trouble with the tenses and slang. I think you could pick up the basics in a month, but don't think you would be able to be fluent.

Hi,
I do not think that Spanish can be learnt in a month . May be one can get a basic feel and idea of simple words ; and of forming some simple sentences . However, one cannot straightaway start speaking complex or even moderately difficult words.
May be if one dedicates oneself to just learning Spanish for the whole day;for a full month;then it might be possible .
Otherwise;it seems very very difficult .

I once took an intensive Italian course (2 months) When I started I was only able to say a few words in Italian and after one month I was able to make myself understood, but I made a lot of mistakes and there were big holes in my vocabulary. After two months I was able to speak Italian quite fast, my Italian still wasn't 100% correct (or 90% correct ), and I still made quite a lot of mistakes but I was able to find the words much faster than before. I think that it is possible to learn some Spanish in one month, but I don't believe that you'll be able to speak it fluently after one month.
