Is crime rate that high in Mexico City?

Some Mexicans who been to Mexico City advised me that if I go to Mexico city, do not walk alone at night time. At least you need some companies along with you. A band of locals, they called "Grupo" always rob and mug the tourists. Just beware of them, and do not travel alone at night time. Guard your wallet cautiously. Have you ever been to Mexico city?
