first you must pay more attention to your discussion. second you should make more friends who are willing to response your topic. third your topic must be very interesting, enjoyable or significant!! last but very important you must follow closely your response. so your topic will attract more people!

make more friends here in this mylot,then u can get more answers and that discussion will also be more hot topic. if u ask about more interesting and new discussion than here,then it will become more hot topic here. and u give photo uploadings for every discussion u start , or for answers of others questions.

In order for the discussion to be placed in top discussion it is being replied by many mylot responders in the same day. For the hot discussion I think a certain discussion has reached a reasonable number of responses and was talked often by mylotters, usually it was posted sometime a day after or a week. That's how I see it though.
