Best way to use Google's AdSense?

Has anyone ever really made a profit off of the AdSense feature? I had to start a blog for a media writing class and one of the features blogspot allows is AdSense to be put on your site and I know you can get money based on page views and clicks but I never got anything from it. Of course when I first started it was maybe a few friends looking at the page because I said something about it or them trying to get it set up but how much traffic do you really need to get anywhere? This is mostly about page views because nowadays it doesn't seem like many people click on ads and I know that with image ads supposedly you get more (?) but I've never had any of them pop up.
