I am working in a language school for children in China. Before going to China, I have worked in different language schools and became a call center agent in my country Philippines. I have undergone rigorous American accent traininng and also ESL (English as a Second Language) training. Many of my adult foreign students appreciated my pronunciation and accent. The principal(not American) in our school called me in her office and advised me not to ever to use "fake American accent" when teaching. She had told me that we just teach students how to speak in English but not the accent. She even explain to me the reason why they don't hire Americans because students couldn't understand their pronunciation. After the talk, I didn't feel bad at all. Instead, I laugh in my mind. Was she insecured of my pronunciation? How can you ever say about fake American accent? Wouldn't you appreciate when a foreigner speaks well in English with great pronunciation?

Yes I do think that I would be very glad that someone was to speak in our accent but I can understand where maybe the principal was right. If your students don't understand you then teaching them English as a Second Language would become extremely hard for you. I would try to teach them more words and not worry about pronouncing, maybe taking them on individually once they get comfortable with the language.
