Do you voice concerns about grades with teachers?

I haven't slept all night last night because a comment that one of my professors made disturbed me. I didn't think that her grading was fair and her comment, where she pretty much said that you cannot receive an A for a subjective paper, bothered me. It especially bothered me since the assignment was to write a personal statement. She's a substitute professor for the rest of the semester because our original professor decided that she couldn't deal with the course and got a replacement for us. It's really bothering me because when I did my assignment I did what the first professor told me to do but this new professor graded it according to her own standards and I got a grade in the 80s when I know I could have gotten in the 90s had the other professor graded my paper. Because I couldn't sleep I got up out of bed at 5 in the morning and voiced my concerns to the professor in an e-mail. I let her know that I thought that the grades were unfair but I explained to her why. I'm afraid that she will misunderstand what my intention of writing the e-mail was because I was not trying to be rude. I wrote it in the most respectful way I could and showed that I understood where she was coming from as well since this is her first time teaching college. This is the first time that I've e-mailed a professor telling them that I did not think the grade I was given was fair. Have you ever been in a similar position? Did you ever tell a teacher that you didn't think the grade you received was fair, what was their response? Or, have you held your tongue because you were afraid that speaking up would affect your grade in a bad way?

I always get that, grades that I dont think that I deserve but higher than that. But then my professors show me their records and I demand as well to see it..Having the right to see my class standing, I always ask my professor to see my grades, where did I get least, is it the quizzes? homework? or exam? If I see that the grade given to me and the grade he's showing me I ask him to check it and he would realize that I am indeed correct! He computed it wrong..

I think that as students we have the right to know where we stand when we're taking a class. It's good that you stand up for yourself and try to find out why you were graded a certain way. It's important for the teacher to break down the grade and explain to the students because it's helpful for us to know why we got a certain grade. There are times when the teachers are right in the grade that they give us as well but we don't know that because they don't explain what we did wrong. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Have a good day :)

Yes.. to add more, telling us the results make us aware of in which criteria we have to focus more to get a higher grade. I just cannot let them dont show me my grades, It always gives me a problem whenever I'm about to enroll. Grades are very suspicious inspite that I know Ive worked hard for it...

I was in a similar situation nearly 2 years ago. I had a class of Law trust. My teacher asked me a question, I said I am thinking of the answer. Without giving me time he asked the same question again and I said I am still thinking. Then he said "you are always thinking, so keep thinking", his comment made me restless all night because he said that loudly infront of all other students.

That sucks. I hate it when teachers behave that way because it makes the classroom an uncomfortable place to be in. I think that students should feel free to express themselves and should be comfortable because that creates a better learning environment. When students fear embarrassment then it keeps them from asking questions or making comments that could be beneficial to the class. I'm thankful that so far I haven't gotten any teachers that were rude to me in that way. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Take care :)

Then you are more lucky than me as I still remember his comment and I feel bad about that. But not as bad as that time ;-)
