Friends to Lovers. Timelimit to define relationship???

When you first start talking to someone new, is there a timelimit to define the relationship. What I am trying to say is, if you meet a person and you do the "friend thing" for too long....does this sabotage any chance of a real relationship. Or does spending more time as friends stregthen the relationship? What do you think?
