Hooking my Computer up to my TV: and using Internet?

Who does this. My boyfriend seems to think I can do this, he watch Tv downloads from the computer on our Flat screen while I still use the computer just as normal. I've heard of getting satellite from your computer but wouldn't I have to still close out my window (say 'MyLot') for him to be able to watch some download from the computer on the Tv?
