I prefer to visit places when there are not huge crowds around. I had an excellent time exploring the Mayan ruins in Central America. The ones inland had few people looking around and then I went to one at the coast. It was lovely between 9 and 10 in the morning and then people arrived, hundreds of them. It was difficult to walk along because people were everywhere. Going out I noticed loads of tourist coaches. I live in a cold country and although it has some lovely beaches only on a hot day do people have the chance to go swimming in the sea. If good weather comes along on a bank holiday the beaches will get packed with people. Traffic jams going home will be likely for lots of people. I like to go to the coast and go around a corner to avoid all the crowds if possible. Therefore on bank holidays I prefer to stay at home.

I also hate to travel during public holidays. The interesting places will be packed with human (that also like us, travel) and hotel will increase the room rates due to high demand. Getting from places will be irritating as more vehicles around the time. Not to mention, eating out won't be as much as enjoyable for many people will be in the place and we might not eat anything at all.

Agree, that's why I don't like to travel on public holidays. There are always so many people in famous scenic spots on public holidays. You can't easily walk and take photos. You can't have a good meal in the restaurants around the scenic spots. They have too many clients. I choose to stay at home on public holidays.

In my country, on long holidays everybody decides to go to the beach. As we have mild winters, we can even go to see the sea (not to take a bath) in mid winter and the sea is normally 2 hours away from the capital. Normally means every time EXCEPT on holidays. Then you can take 4 hours to reach a beach jammed with people as the road was jammed with cars. In those days, the wise thing is to stay at home, go to the cinema (you can take your pick of the seat you want), go to the super where you will be attended by the cashier in no tiem at all. As for Mayday, it is different here. We all try to stay at home. There are few buses riding and the only open places are places where they sell meds. It´s the perfect day for a DVD, a book or a nap.
