How do you generate traffic to your website

Hello I'm a beginner web designer here, and I was wondering how all of you have generated traffic to your websites. I've kept trying but all of the time I haven't generated any. I would like to know about the different ways you've done it, and how you found out about it. From a friend? Internet? Family?
Also tell me why you decided to make a website too.

i guess thebest way to get traffic is to offer better content on the site and then start promoting the same content on other sites.
For example if your bloggin on a certain topic, write a good article then post it on other sites like squidoo, get yourself known on other sites. Then provide back links like mentioned above, cuz people will then want to know you.

for me.. i do with social networks..
i promote it at social networks through posts and topics....
and thats working great for me..
