Do you think dance should be taught at school?

One of my friends from Europe mentioned that she was taught how to ballroom dance at school. I thought this was really nice as I never had any dance lessons at school in the UK but can imagine I would have really enjoyed them. Were you taught how to dance at school?

I think that it would be great to have dance taught in school. It's great exercise and can open up a lot of doors for children in a lot of different ways. I would have loved to have taken a sdance class versus gym..although I enjoyed gym too. It would be great if parents had the option of their children taking dance or gym. They could even mix it up and take one one year and the other the next. Nice discussion!

Thanks! I feel the same way. Now as an adult I look back and think that learning dance at school would have been really great.

I think that would be a lovely thing to be taught, when we were at school we had drama for a while, but then the ciriculum changed and that was that. Our school did a performance every year and all kids were encouraged to take part,in the choir or a bit part of some sort.We enjoyed this and spent many a happy dinner time rehearsing what wonderful memories.Unfortunately most schools don't have the time these days to teach the subjects literacy and numercy seem to take up most of the time.I do feel dance is like art a good way to express your self and teach discipline. My little grandaughter is a member of a dance school and really gets so much out of it she is six and her confidence is such she has been in performance open to the public to three years running she is incredible and quite a little diva at times,it is her temprament.I suppose eventually the school bodies might decide the way we were educated was a good thing plenty of pe.art and dance, did alright on it.

That's lovely that your grand daughter enjoys it so much. If taught from a young age I am sure it is a fantastic confidence booster. Thanks for the response suzzy3.

I think it would be a good idea if kids were given the option as some people just take to it and if it gets kids active thats what is important. I was talk scottish country dancing mainly because we would be able to take part in school dances which were just those kind of dances. I quite liked it as the dancing was quite simple and very energetic. I'd love to go to a ceilidh and put it all back into practice not sure I'd remember all the steps tho.

I know what you mean. It would save those adults who don't take to dancing a lot of embarrassment. Some people can dance great naturally and others need to be taught - seeing as dancing is actually very healthy, it makes sense to teach it at school.

Yes sure the dance should be given in schools. So children get relaxation and dance is a good exercise for parts of the body.

Yes I sometimes think that dance as a form of exercise is underrated. Thanks for responding.

Yes ofcourse! Dance is a good exercise for both mind and body. It must be taught at school. I had no interest in dance since my childhood. But, now I wanna learn dance. But I couldn't find a right teacher. If it was taught at school under compulsion, I would have learnt it!

I know how you feel. It is so much easier to learn things when we are younger too. If at least it was an optional subject, students that did want to learn it would be able to.

I know what you are saying and I do agree. It's just that there are certain styles of dance which are more 'organised' and therefore it is difficult to dance in those styles unless we know what we are doing! Thanks for the response though

Yeah, during my college days. We had so much variation to choose from for our PE class starting from sophome years until I graduated. I took ballroom dansing for one semester. Its full of fun and learned to be more graceful and some new steps at that time. Happy mylotting!

Thats what is so lovely about ballroom dancing in my opinion - that it is such a graceful dancing style. Thanks for the response.

I think it should be offered at school but still should be an option, like an "elective" classes that you don't absolutely need for graduating but still have an option to take it if a child is interested... I was fortunate enough to learn it from my parents when I was younger... I still wish school had it avaliable so that I could learn more than just 1... When I was younger, I think around 10, at one of my father's job function, he took the whole family & I saw a couple dancing... It was "argentine tango"... My dad saw me stare at them & that night told me about it...

I do find myself sometimes watching such elaborate and sophisticated dances either at parties or on TV and think that I could've been pretty good by now had I have learnt at school. You were lucky to be taught by your parents. Thanks for the response.

I was taught ballroom dancing in school but that was 50 years ago. It was part of our PE program. It was the most useful part for me.

I think they should bring it back! I don't think any UK schools do it, not the state schools anyway. Thanks for the response!

I can recall doing some kind of dance at school but it iwas a one time thing. Of course this was many years ago. As far as actual lessons we did not have that. I know a lot of kids today who ballroom dancing so maybe that is something that has come out recently. I have heard that there's African dancing also at some schools.

Hi Shree :) I personally never learnt dance in school and I was fine with that. They still don't teach dance in school here in Canada as far as I know. My kids don't have it and I haven't heard of it. I personally don't want it to be incorporated with my kids lessons because I already feel they should be learning more at school and I don't want something to be taken away so they can add dance class. In highschool however they had a dance team and if you wanted to be a part you had to try out and then be on the team. The only problem with that is you had to be accepted. I can dance but I never tried out as team things weren't for me. I think it would be great if it was offered as an after school activity with a real trainer however. Or I could maybe accept the the choice be either physical education or dance. Alot of girls don't want to do the sports they teach in PE.... I know I wasn't a big fan of them. If I had the choice I definetly would have chosen dance!!!

I didn't like PE either but I think dance would have been cool. Ballroom dancing for example would have been fun to learn at school. Thanks for the response.
