Is anyone here interested in discussing about the current situation in Sri Lanka? I hope mylotters interested in politics and world affairs have an idea of what's going on in Sri Lanka. The minority Tamil population had been fighting for their legitimate civil rights and equal status from the majority Sinhalese community for a long time before it turned into a civil war. Now what's going on now is genocide of the Tamil population by the Sinhalese Army. The world seem to be ignorant of the plight of the disadvantaged people in Sri Lanka. The world can no longer view this as an internal problem. It can't be an internal problem when hundreds of children and women are killed all the time. If the world is ready to tackle the Darfur crisis and does not view it as a internal problem, why then a different take for Sri Lanka?

I don't know much about Sri Lanka, but the situation sounds awful! Keep posting this on different political forums and get your message out. It's always difficult for the US to become involved, because then everyone comes down on us. I believe that the US has an obligation to help other countries with these issues, but unfortunately, diplomacy and sanctions do not always work

I think you are absolutely right. Diplomacy and sanctions do not always work. In fact, i believe that it does not work all the time. I think the UN is a joke when it comes to solving international political crisis. Everytime something tragic or some tumultous political upheaval happens in a country, the UN immediately issues a condemnation statement. That is all they can do. At the most, the UN secretary-general makes a visit to the countries concerned and makes the same statement or maybe a little different statement, wasting donor countries monies on all those free trips. I guess the UN secretary general is using these opportunities to visit as much countries as possible so that he got something to write about in his memoirs when he retires. The UN is a bloody joke. They are just good at coordinating food aid to starving countries and to supply the ineffecive and so-called peacekeeping forces to the affected countries. That is all it is to the UN.
