If you've owned or used different brands of computers, which was the best?

I was curious as to the experience of others, and what computer brand they have found to be the best all around. I've used IBM, Hewlett Packard, and Dell...laptops and desktops, both. So far, the best all around for me has been Dell. I've also switched to using a laptop almost exclusively. You?

I don't used branded computers because their expensive. I assemble a CPU myself. Choose the parts to be installed. Because I could have the chance to upgrade whenever I want to upgrade my computer. Compare to those branded once which limits your options to some upgrading.

If only! I don't have the skills to do that, but kudos to you for having learned them!

I literally grew up with a keyboard below my hand. I remember my first ever computer. It was a Pionex, 25MHz with a VGA display. Man, computers have come a loooooooong way since then. It didn't take long for that computer to get replaced. I can't remember the brand of computer we got after that, but it started having all sorts of problems before it stopped working. My 3rd computer was an EMachines. My friend Trablamon is using one of those, and he's having the same kind of problems I had with it. He had to use the recovery disk twice, as did I. My sister owns that one now. Whatever you do, DON'T buy an EMachines... They SUCK! My last computer is the one I'm using right now. It's a Gateway GM5084, And I'll admit, for the 3 years I've been using it, it's been fairly good to me. I also have a Tandy that I got from my uncle, and a laptop I found at a computer fair for $100 that I use to play old DOS games with. The laptop is a Toshiba, and I've seen it run some newer games. Not very well, but it works nonetheless. Overall, the Gateway was the best, though.

I've had Gateway and Dell desktops and one that I don't remember the brand from the dark ages. I have an HP/Compaq laptop. All of them have been good as far as I could tell. When I first got Gateway was that at that time they had lifetime support which has now changed and it was very good for a long time but got bad near the end. Now Gateway no longer has lifetime support and I don't know how good it is. My most recent desktop is a Dell and so far the actual hardware is pretty good but the support has been terrible right from the the start. The HP/Compaq laptop has been good with no complaints about anything

I haven't even seen comercials for Gateway in a long time. They are the one that came in a box that was like a black-and-white cow, if I remember correctly. I haven't needed support for the Dell, yet. Hope it's not a lot of trouble if I do! Thank you for your insights.

I have only ever had a Compaq and a Gateway; the Gateway is far better in my opinion.

My son-in-law had a gateway he really loved at one time, but has since switched to Dell. I say, stay with what YOU love. I appreciate your response. Karen
