When Planting a Garden, Do You Prefer Annuals or Perennials or just shrubs?

We recently have purchased a new house, well, new to us. The yard is like a blank canvas to create upon. It is perfectly flat but the soil is crappy. I have been spending hours looking at different gardening ideas and landscape ideas. I cant afford to do the whole property so I will start with the areas visible to the road for added curb appeal. I like to go crazy with flowers...I like to have a variety of both perennials and annuals. I like the perennials because they return year after year on their own. I also like the annuals as their blooms are continuous throughout our growing season, where perennials are generally short lived. I also like a few evergreen shrubs to have something during the winter months. I guess I will have a big mixture... WHich do you prefer, annuals or perennials?

Hi Sandymay, Congratulations on your new home, I hope you have many happy years ahead of you there I guess I like a mix of both although, I am not much of a gardener, but we have the garden looking nice with a mix of colour and greenery. My better half is a bit of a gardening whizz and knows what to plant where, so hats off the her really for having green fingers. I am a more of mow the lawn and weeding type man.

Well hello there buddy!..Thanks..we will have many busy years there, planting flowers and veggies, oh, I guess I should grow a lawn too, although I did consider, a fountain with a circular driveway, and all surrounded with pea gravel... It would make my hubby very happy if he didnt have to mow the lawn Im sure. I tried to convince him to put in a pool to take up space too..I havent won that battle yet,,,but I will!

Sounds like your going to have a fun time with all that landscaping. A fountain with a circular driveway, that sounds very nice and very cool too. Mowing the lawn can be a real pain. Our back yard is massive and there is just way to much grass to cut even though we have a lot of it paved, it could still do with less grass. I wouldn't mind a pool either but then we don't really get the weather here to make it an option. I have no doubt you will win the battle as woman always get what they want in the end

I like perennials because they come up on their own every year. Of coarse, providing you take care of them. One year, I neglected to water these mums. They did not come back the following year and I know it's my fault. You do have a good point that the perennials are short lived. A few weeks ago I planted some sweeds for wildflowers. According to the box, it says they last all summer long. Also on the box I noticed it said packaged for 2003. I thought maybe it's too late but thought I'd try it anyway. So far, nothing has come up.

Annual bed - My new tiny annual bed...adds a splash of colour to my dead lawn that I have to fix
Yes, even though the perennials come up on their own, they still have to be looked after. They still need water, fertiilzer, light, all the basic requirements for them to survive. I love mixes of wild flowers, SOme are better than others..I did have 2 gardens one year that were all wildflowers and they both turned out lovely. They do last all summer as there are a variety of flowers that bloom at different times.
