I think I have ever heard this saying from some folks. But I have not tried doing that, so don't know how true it is. I believe the pain in your foot is caused by the friction between your foot and the new shoes, as your shoes are still new, they are rough and hard. Usually I will try to rub and squeeze and whatever... to make the new shoes soften a little before I start wearing. It seems to work.

I did heard about it when I was a kid. But I don't think that I will ever do that, bite my new shoe . That's why I always got bitten by my new shoes.

When I have a new shoes. I usually wear it at home with my socks on. The socks I am using is the one I wear with my rubber shoes, the thicker one. Then I just walk around the house with my new shoes the whole day. So that when I already wear it at work, it is already comfortable on my feet. Hope this helps.
