Guinness World Record-The Largest Firework

China
May 20, 2009 8:10pm CST
From today's Chinadaily Fireworks in the shape of the Chinese national flag were set off May 19 at a sports center in Liuyang, Hunan, renewing the Guinness World Record for "the largest firework national flag". The flag was 48m long and 28m wide, and it was raised and accompanied by the playing of the Chinese national anthem. It is said that the develpment of fireworks cost 2 million RMB. It's really exciting and good news except that i don't think it make too much sense. What's a Guinnesss world record for firework mean if it costs such a huge amount of money? Maybe I'm critic, but can't they donate the money to help victims around the world, say the earthquake-hitted area? What does a Guinness World Record mean to it. Mental nutrients?

I don't know why some people do waste money although if it is set off for a holiday I can understand wanting to set off fireworks and symbolize something for the country! Hmm! Well I don't know, maybe it wasn't a big punch / chunk for them.

Yes it's true the money they used could have been used for other things that are more important. I know that sometimes money used on things in the government aren't completely agreed upon with all the citizens. Maybe throughout the world we should take note and stop spending so much.

Hey, SomeCowgirl, like you, I can't understand their behavior from my part. Maybe they want to show off they now master a new technology or something. Yeah, development of firework is not that easy. But use such a huge money, no, not from my point of view never ever. If it's research money for the medicine, it's ok

I think its an excess too far. Its not only wastage of economy but also doing great harm to the world's environment. I never take part in fireworks display. I feel nauseated for the pollution, smoke and also feel sick from within to see the extravagance. Thanks for sharing this Lyn. Hope you are doing well.

Hey, mimpi, I like watching fireworks. It's really beautiful, but yeah, it's dangerous and lots of smoke. You know the flare all caused by the combustion of some chemcial products, when they are combusted, different colors will display.

That's quite a big sum of money to be spending on fireworks!! Though it could be used to help victims of earthquakes or whatever, but i believe they should have a reason for doing so ^_^ Maybe, china just wants some form of recognition in terms of internationally.. Most countries will tend to have something in the Gunniess world record, and if china does not have any, wont u feel that it's a lost of face or pride?? Though 2 million is a big sum of money, but i think it should be worth it, for it wont be happening a second time again ^_^

I think it is because of one's personal goals. I mean sure their goals might be not that practical but it would give them much self fulfillment to prove to themselves that they can and have done it. Much more if their accomplishments are credited and acknowledged by most of the people in the world. They are also forever listed in history and in these record books. So I guess it would add up to their being 'immortalized' in a way. One has to say and take note that most of these stunts and records are too much for an ordinary or average man to accomplish. I guess they are just blatantly announcing to the whole world just how much unique they are. Im also not into the Guinness World Records just because of the reasons that you have stated. These records same as Ripley's (I think) dont give the people who participate monetary rewards. They just give some plaque or recognition or something. Still, I just try to understand them since it is into their self discovery and growth.

Yeah, you got it right lynette. Its also the same with competitions. That's also a part of human survival. Only the best can stay or something like that.

Thanks bjcyrix, thant kind of explain why they spend so much money to pursue world record, like the olympic games. Is that the same as competition? Cause i think competition with others is nonsesne, we should and can only compare with ourselves. Well, maybe there's never a fair competition, even the same person, cause time's different too. No same two leaves or two same rivers.

As one coin has two parts, the issue also has two parts.Like you says,it is so exciting and good news and it let the people over the world see the greatest scenery.I think it has historical value. The Guinness world record to record human track. But in some way I think it is a waste of money. If donated the money to the victims, they would get better. I think there is no wrong and right in the world. One issue is right in your veiw while it is wrong in others' point of veiw. When we choose to one side, we always depend on our own value.

I agree that one coin has two sides. Right and wrong sometimes difficult to distinguish, are there really rights and wrongs? I doubt it. Thanks for responding.

Hello lynettebyc. I hold the same view as you do. It is a waste of money to spend that huge amount of money on fireworks for the breaking the record of Guinness. I don't think that it is worth it. Why not use the money to help those who are needy or why not use the money to improve people's living standard? It is simply a waste of money as well as some kind of pollution to the air. Heroes meet, friend.
