How do you change preferences?

I was reading one of the discussions and it said I couldn't view it because that was what my preferences was set for, but it must be defaulted to that. I've tried to find out how to check and change my preferences in the FAQ's and tried doing a search, but can't seem to access it. I also went to my profile, but didn't see any way to change it there, either. Pressing the "edit preferences" button didn't get me anywhere, also.
