Is there a lower life span on new computers or was this just a fluke? We bought a new HP desktop computer around Feb. 2007. It started having problems about after a year. At first we just attributed it to the fact that it had Vista, but the problems continued. I installed the Windows 7 beta on it a few months ago, and it ran fine, but then it started acting up again. What do yo think?

If you had said that it was a laptop, then I would have said it could definitely have problems even after only a year. A desktop, however, and an HP at that, shouldn't really be having problems. If it is still under warranty, you can probably take it back to the store where you bought it, and at the very least they can try running it to see if they can fix the problem. The could also wipe out the hard drive (back up files first!), cause maybe what you have is a virus.

I am not sure if it is still under warrenty but I hae wiped the hard drive and reinstalled windows, but it seems to only work a little. I've done it several times and the most recent time it only worked for a few days before it gave me problems. We ended up getting a new computer, so the problem doesn't matter as much, but i'd like to fix it up and use it as a spare or soemthing.

This usually happens to a lot of users. Its a combination of a lot of factors such as installing lots of programs, filling your hard disk up even doing stuff on the net can serve to clog it up. I would reccomend prgrams such as tune up utilities 09 which could help add a bit of speed to your pc. Also make sure you run spybot on it on a regular basis to keep it spywre free. Hope this helps

I have reinstalled windows several times so it shoulnd't be a virus or too many programs because the last time I reinstalled windows, it only worked for a few days before it started slowing down and hanging up

From your explanations, it appears that you probably have a hardware problem. You don't explain what kinds of problems you are having but, did you add any new hardware, like memory, a hard-drive or a video card recently? The next thing that you should check is your power supply with a multi-meter. If it's not doing it's job properly, it can cause a lot of problems. Your final option would be to take it in for a diagnostic check to see what exactly the problem is. If it's going to cost you more than say $300 to fix, I would say it's not worth it.

If you've exhausted all options, then it's time to take it in to a professional who will be better equipped to tell you what is exactly wrong. You mentioned that you've newly installed your OS a number of times and can only get it to work for a while. This rules out a software problem unless you are installing a piece of software that conflicts with Windows. Did you re-install Windows and nothing else? You might want to try to do this and without accessing the internet for a few days and see what happens. The best thing to do is to document every step you do in your installation and use and see when the problem crops up. This may give you a better idea what the problem might be. Hope this helps! Good luck!!

Well, I have already bought a new computer so its not too much of a concern. I haven't installed any new hardware. Everything in it is original. I don't think it is the power supply either. I have tried different ones.
