Hedges versus the brick wall

I have noticed a lot of people getting rid of their hedges and having brick walls built in their gardens. I know it might be low maintainence but is a brick wall really that much better to look at than a pretty garden hedge? Hedges can have colour and are better for the nature in your garden. They might be hard work to trim but isn't it worth it?
