why there are rank and sometimes don't when responding?

I am just wondering why sometimes rank appears, sometimes do not if you respond discussion. What does it mean if you have rank?

I know only if members write to 500 posts ,they will have ranking.

It is not the reason that having 500 posts you will earn a rank. I only noticed it when i respond to some discussion i earned a ranked in other discussion i responded i do not earn a rank. Specifically i do not earn a rank in a discussion under "lover" in "internet" which logo appear to be that of internet explorer i have rank but if i respond in "internet" not that of internet explorer logo, i do not have rank. That i am asking why.

I'm new here and was wondering the same thing about the ranks. Whoever knows any help would be greatly appreciated.
