Is success a logical conclusion to our efforts ?

Too many times, many of us find ourselves in situations where we would have put in a great amount of efforts only to be told by our friends, relaives, peer group, subordinates and superiors that they weren't enough. Inspite of putting the best of the efforts many of us don't taste the success associated with the efforts. Has anyone of you also gone through such a trauma. Please share.
