Social Networking to gain friends? interested in being one

Personally, I am a naturally independent person, but I enjoy learning and hearing new things from other people. I feel social networking lets me find others and make new friends. Am I pathetic that I cannot find real people outside of my internet? Or is it right for me to assume that some unrefined beauty exists out there? What makes a stranger so appealing to befriend?
