Can any Chow Chow owners out there help and give me some advice, our Chow has recently developed a skin rash that turns flaky and is obviously itchy as he scratches it a lot. This makes it flake more. We've tried various dermitalogical shampoos but they don't work. The local vet doesn't know the breed (we live in Thailand) and said just keep shampooing, it's the change in weather thats causing the problem. Anyone else with a Chow have any similar experiences?

Sounds like a Heat Spot, you should shave the area around it, remove all skin within a fingers length around the area and apply lotion to it daily. three times a day if you can. You will want to make sure the lotion contains an anti itch in it, and even human lotion will do. does he or she chew on the spot a good bit, if so then it could very well be a heat spot.. lotion, lots and lots of lotion and actually you will need to avoid washing him till it clears up as water dries out the skin.

Thanks, yes he does chew it but it's not in one place on his body it's pretty much all over especially on his hind quarters and his mane.
