Once again I am turning to the great minds here on mylot for advice. We recently had to replace my 5 yr olds hamster as the old one escaped. When I bought it the man told me to only get the one because they will fight to the death worth each other if they are put in the same cage. I thought it was strange because I thought I remembered seeing groups of them in the same cage at the pet store but blew it off saying I must be mistaken. Well now our new lady has stopped running on her wheel and rarely comes out from under her bedding. I am wondering if maybe she is depressed. Some my questions to you are do they fight with each other and could she be depressed and/or lonely? If she is do you guys think we should get her a buddy? We just want her to be happy our pets are like family to us so I need serious advice. Thank you all for taking the time to read and reply to this. Gotta love mylotters.

Hi Freedom. here's what I found: Hamsters are primarily nocturnal (night-active), though they may exhibit relatively short periods of activity throughout the day. which may be why you don't see too much activity. Pet hamsters are usually housed singly. unless your hamster is ready to "knock fur" hamsters, especially females can become quite aggressive towards other hamsters. that seems odd to me too, because I seem to always remember seeing herds of hamsters together in the same cage when I was a kid. hmmmm.....maybe they were gerbils..........or mice..........I'm getting old. http://www.caringtogether.com/exotics/hamsters2.html don't forget to get your hamster one of those balls they can ride around in...........if I was a hamster I would want one of those balls..........heck, I think I want one anyways.

Thank you so much. It is always great knowing that I can count on help from mylotters. We do have a ball for her and she loves it. Mostly I think because she can torture that cats and they can't touch her. I also agree that one of those balls would be so much fun. I've been thinking about getting this one. http://www.uswaterball.com/ The kids would love it. Thank you for the post.
